THE TEMPERATURE IN THE GALLERIES IS ALWAYS 11-12 ° C WITH 100% humidity so you need heavy sports clothing even in summer, trekking shoes are highly recommended.
- BY FOOT is the best solution.
The mine can be reached from Sessa or Astano via many existing routes.
The signposts must be followed.
- New PostBus timetables (https://www.postauto.ch/en/timetable) now offer good connections to the Mine (stop: La Costa)
IMPORTANT: GROUPS must reserve the bus for La Costa di Sessa (MINE)
- BY CAR in LA COSTA the small car park is reserved mainly for residents.
A new car park is now available near the camping Al Parco d'oro (see directions).
- BUS: both Sessa and Astano maximum width of 2.3 m, maximum length of 10 m

THE PROJECT
The recovery project, started in 2015, aims to enhance the status of the Sessa Goldmine in terms of tourism, education and culture.
It‘s about protecting and preserving an authentic part of the history and culture of Malcantone, Luganese and whole Ticino.
On the one hand, work was carried out on the restoration and rehabilitation of the gold mine itself. On the other hand, the outdoor area was upgraded by re-establishing a "Rustico" for the reception of future visitors.
All restoration works were thus related to two areas:
The internal area
The tunnels were restored so that the historic features could be preserved. The beauties of mining art could be secured with the original equipment and enhanced with an appropriate lighting. At the same time, the lighting also serves to make the tunnels accessible to the public.
The external area
The old compressor room was reconverted into the reception area for the visitors (ra Ca dara Minéra). A small thematic exhibition is located on the upper floor and was created in collaboration with the Museum of the Sessa Goldmine. This exhibition informs the visitor about all various historical mining phases as well as about the metalworking steps. The external area, including educational panels, is an outdoor leisure area enhanced by a beautiful terrace overlooking the Tresa valley.
In addition to the guided tours through the tunnels, the aim of the Associazione Miniera d 'Oro di Sessa
is to provide visitors in the future with:
- educational documents for schools;
- play corner centered on the topic of gold research;
- further related activities, such as the gold research in the Malcanone rivers;
- guided expeditions in the region: to the mining area of Astano and to other mines / ore mines of Malcantone.
A CONCENTRATE OF EXPERIENCE AND HISTORY
The Monte Sceré area, like all Malcantone, has a rich mineral subsoil. It is believed that as early as the 18th century various metals were recovered, especially iron, lead, silver and gold.
The earliest documented attempts at gold mining date back to 1785, but near the Lisora River there are well-ordered pebbles that are well washed and show the remnants of the exploitation of gold terraces from Roman times (Aurifodine).
For this reason, Malcantone was listed as one of the largest mining areas in Switzerland.
By 2015, the mine was abandoned by La Costa di Sessa and forgotten by all. Hidden in the undergrowth, access to the mine was inaccessible, although the miners dug an underground labyrinth of more than 2 km of corridors, which were spread over 5 levels.
The public-access route, passing through a 375-meter-long gallery named "Leonilde", allows you to discover the most spectacular and characteristic elements of the mining world.
The mine is still the only possible experience to experience the history of mining and gold mining in Switzerland.
